JULY / license plate recycling

Ever wonder what to do with old license plates? Well after I found a pile of them in our garage (my husband as bought + sold several cars over the last few years), I wanted to dig further. First, we don’t need them anymore. Second, I know you want to “destroy” them much like you’d like to shred personal information from mail. So here’s what I found out.

SOLUTION: License plates are made of aluminum, therefore they’re easily recyclable + easy to bend. Check locally for what you’re community recycling pick up takes or what you can drop off at your local recycling center (if you’re lucky enough to have one - take advantage!). There may be some specific requirements in your city/state, but in general, I found 2 common recommendations. 1) You can take them to your local DMV for them to recycle, but you’ll likely have to make an appointment or wait in line (hard pass for this lady). 2) You can bend + fold up your license plates with little effort + toss them in your recycling can or drop off locally where they collect aluminum for recycling. See photo - I folded our up with my hands (without much effort) then pounded them down even more with a mallet. Took less then 5 minutes + then I tossed them in our recycling can. Done!
