Q: Why Are Kitchens Challenging to Manage?

The process of organizing can feel hard or particularly confusing when you forget to connect items with essential tasks + day to day routines in your home. The objects you keep in your home must be tied to something you are doing, + these actions you’re taking (laundry, making breakfast, reading before bed) must then drive the location of how you group things + where you store them. If you skip this step, organizing is hard to make sense of. PS. If you want organizing to feel really hard, skip decluttering. It will make your efforts feeling unending + impossible! Always declutter first.

Kitchen Decluttering Tips:

➜ START SMALL - choose a small amount of time + a small area to work on

➜ EDIT THE EXTRAS - start by decluttering one drawer in your kitchen. Remove anything that you don’t use frequently, is in poor shape or you no longer find value in. By removing these items, you’ll be able to more easy see + find what you have, save time + so much less digging around…yes please!

➜ KEEP GOING - go small zone by zone, one cabinet, one shelf, one counter top. Remove the extras and non-essentials. The essentials are items that make life easier in your kitchen. We also want to limit how many “sometimes or occasionally used” items in your kitchen because they eat up value space for daily kitchen routines.

Kitchen Organizing Tips:

➜ PLACE ITEMS WHERE YOU USE THEM - for example, chopping knives ideally should be right next to the surface they are used on. Scan any drawer, countertop, appliance, etc. It is located in the most efficient and convenient space to use it in? Are you taking extra steps across your kitchen to complete a basic task, making everything take longer than it needs to? Location is everything!

➜ REDUCE ITEMS OUT ON HORIZONTAL SURFACES - especially counter tops. If they are full of stuff, they are not useful. Only keep items out that are essential. Aim to have as little out as possible. It’s also better for your brain, creating less visual fatigue…remember, every item out in your home pulls for your energy + attention.

➜ CREATE LOCATION HIERARCHIES BASED ON HOW OFTEN SOMETHING IS USED - for example, you should not be digging in the back of a drawer to get your favorite chopping knife you use everyday - it should be in an easy to reach (but safe) location. Drawers should allow you to see everything you have at a glance, so nothing gets lost or hidden. Lesser used items can be lower, higher, or towards the back. Keep all the most used items, that you need frequent touch access to, in the front, easily visible or eye level.
