Q: Why Are Seasonal Shifts + the Holidays Challenging on a Home?

Simply put, there’s a lot of change + new stuff trying to work its way into your home. Transitions can be hard and take time to process, which is exactly what seasonal shifts are. The holidays, while similar, often come with their own set of rules. You’ll find there’s lots of overlaps between seasonal shifts (from Spring to Summer, for example) and holidays or birthdays, with some obvious differences.

Seasonal shifts are less about items coming into the home and more about assessing/taking inventory of what you currently have and what you need to let go of.

Holidays are times where we must lean in hard to protect and filter our home from things coming into it, like gifts, toys, decor, etc.

The tips we’ll share here will aim to help you through both of these related times of the year and what things you can do to make these yearly milestones more enjoyable and simple to navigate.

Seasonal Decluttering Tips:

➜ SCAN YOUR HOME - start small + think in categories. If you’re moving into a cooler season, check in on your clothing, outerwear, accessories for things you might need or items that can be donated. Apply this however it makes sense between each seasonal transition.

➜ CHECK IN ON YOUR FOOD - before moving into a new season is an excellent time to do a food audit in your fridge, freezer, pantry, cabinets, etc. Remove expired items. Remove items that it’s clear your not using/eating. Move items to the front that have been forgotten so they get used up. Clean and reset these spaces so you can see and access everything you need to at a glance. Backstock can be in a less obvious location.

➜ DO A QUICK WALK THROUGH - this requires very little time but will get you big results quick. Walk your home with a box or paper bag. Go from room to room and drop in items that you are ready to part with. Think about the easy stuff first that you see at a glance. Old magazines, books covered in dust, clothing you’re avoiding, toys no one has touched in a year, clothing that doesn’t fit, decor you simply don’t like anymore. It shouldn’t take much thought and should be quick decisions to make. Keep going if you want to dig in deeper but start simple.

Holiday Decluttering Tips:

➜ SET BOUNDARIES + CREATE A PLAN - if you’re upon a more gift-heavy holiday season, set boundaries with family and friends about needs or things you and your family don’t need. Also take it as an opportunity to find out about their needs as well. The first step to decluttering is being able to filter what comes it before it ever shows up at your door.

➜ DECLUTTER WITH INTENTION - for example, if your child has a birthday coming up, I’d spend your energy on doing a quick scan on their belongings (with them ideally) to see if they have any needs or wants. This is the perfect time to remove items they have outgrown both physically and developmentally.

For adults, if you have decor focused around a particular holiday, declutter as you pull things out and remove anything you no longer use/love.

➜ BE RESOURCEFUL - aim to use what you have and try to bring in as little as possible while you enjoy the holiday. Reuse, reinvent, or give yourself the gift of space by removing items from your home that you no longer use, value or love.
