The culture of “busy” is harmful to us + our families. Society parades this around like a badge of honor, while it damages our daily connections with others, the environment we create in our home + our health. Slowing down at home will help us value + enjoy life on a whole new level that we desperately seek.

Q: Why Does Slow Living Feel Hard To Do?

Slow living + rest is something that has to be intentionally practiced + is not necessarily intuitive for most of us. If you grew up in a household that didn’t prioritize rest, you were always busy/on the go, then you likely struggle with the concept (me). Your personality might also dictate your willingness to slow down + incorporate restful practices in your daily life. Regardless of where you’re at right now, infusing more slow living practices in your day to day is possible, even in small bits. You get to set the rules + create the life you want. You get to decide whether or not you continue to get swept up in the “busy culture” or opt out of it + set your own pace.

Slow living tips:

➜ START SMALL - choose one or a few things to reduce the “rush” in your day to day. Drive the speed limit. Pause for a cup of tea. Make a slow cooked or nourishing meal. Read a book. Go for a short walk to get fresh air + sunshine. Light a candle or diffuse a favorite scent. Play calming music or enjoy some silence to calm your mind. Reduce what you own, one item at a time.

➜ REDUCE TECHNOLOGY USE - put the phone down, especially in the presence of others to connect + effectively communicate with those around you. This is especially true with children of all ages. Set technology use time windows + stick to them. Set boundaries that work for you + your family + stick to them. Reduce their use as you get close to bedtime to improve your quality of sleep.

➜ SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE - slow living is a lot about removing + reducing the extras that frankly just create brain noise within us. Some ways you might see this translate into your home include decluttering any room, space or small zone, reducing your daily essentials in your car or bag for work, planning meals that can stretch several days or easily be reinvented with minimal effort, creating meals that are indeed simple while still be nourishing + enjoyable or removing commitments/tasks/costs from your day to day that aren’t essential or living giving to you in this season.

Slow living myths:

➜ IT’S NOT FOR THE MODERN WOMAN. WRONG. Slow living can be infused in any lifestyle, in any season of life, at any time. It does not have to be an all or nothing thing.

➜ I HAVE TO CHANGE EVERYTHING TO LIVE SLOWER. WRONG. Again, this does not have to be an all or nothing thing. You can ease into slow living by choose one thing to add or remove. You can remove technology from your night time routine before bed, drink tea during part of your morning or afternoon, cook food in a different way, etc. There is no perfect number of slow living techniques to achieve - you incorporate them as you see fit.

➜ IT DOESN’T WORK WITH MY SEASON OF LIFE. WRONG. If you think that, you likely need more slow woven into your day to day. I’ve been there, in a constant state of rush + fight or flight mode. It does not need to or have to be this way. Small, intentional shifts in your daily life add up over time, restores your energy + helps you show up as a better version of you in all areas of life. We all need bits of slow living to rest + refresh daily. If we don’t your body will force you to by ways of illness or other home life issues.

➜ SLOW LIVING IS ABOUT DRINKING TEA + HOMEMAKING ONLY. WRONG. It can be able those things if you want it to be. Or some of those things. At the core of slow living we are putting into practice strategic actions/task/joys that simplify + slow time + help us be connected in the place we’re in + with the people (or animals) we are around. Slow living for me has a lot to with gardening + seed harvest. These both may have no interest to you or are not accessible to you where you life. Your slow living connection to nature might look completely different + that is OK. Just as ever home dynamic is different, the way each person will infuse slow living techniques will too look different. And frankly, I love this so much.
